A beggar had been sitting by the side of a road for over thirty years. One day a stranger walked by. “Spare some change?” mumbled the beggar, mechanically holding out his baseball cap. “I have nothing to give you, said the stranger. Then he asked: “What’s that you are sitting on?” “Nothing,” replied the beggar. “Just an old box. I have been sitting here on it for as long as I can remember.” “Ever looked inside?” asked the stranger. “No” said the beggar. “What’s the point? There’s nothing inside.” “Have a look inside,” insisted the stranger. The beggar managed to pry open the lid. With astonishment, disbelief and elation, he saw that the the box was filled with gold.

What does this story stir in you?
How much of what has been hiding inside you are you willing to let out? 2%? 10%? 50%?
Many of us were taught to fit in, to be like everyone else…that to stand out puts a target on your back….
So looking inside for the gold within is an edge because without a doubt, once you open that lid, you can never go back.
When I was young, I had no idea who I was or what I might be good at, what I liked to wear or even what colors I liked. I didn’t know that I was good at drawing, or writing. Intuition was a stranger with no connection to me. I lived in my head where it was safe.
Or so I thought.
As I grew older I became aware that I was very different from others – I learned differently, I processed differently, I even walked differently. And I used to make that difference a reason to hide.
One day I discovered that I, too, was sitting on a box, year after year, overflowing with gold, filled with riches beyond imagination. The riches, it turned out, was my difference.
We all have a gift, something that makes us unique. Not a single one of us has had the combination of the same life experience, the same DNA, the same anything. Put that together into a package and out comes each beautiful, magical, unique human being.
If you stopped just long enough to peak inside the box you were sitting on, what gift would you find that has been waiting all these years for you to discover? What tomorrow is waiting for you to create simply by choosing something different today, to be the difference that is you; t-o-d-a-y?
Maybe walking the edge is being you – is the adventure of self-discovery – and maybe living our lives is about being excited about living, about being engaged, fully present, in the messiness of every moment, walking the edge of not know the next moment and making it up as we go. What if we could let go of control, of having to be in control, of knowing what is waiting for us and trusting ourselves and the Universe enough to let go – and enjoy this beautiful life? What is that box you have been sitting on all your life is full of riches and gold beyond your wildest imagination and all you have to do is be willing to peak inside.
