Faerie or Human? – by Mary Lou Stark

Perhaps it is part of my Irish heritage but faerie rings in the deepest part of the forest have always fascinated me. There is an aura of mystery and magic in the mist that floats through them.

They represent a land of possibilities. I have wondered what life would be like in that setting.

Most of my life feels much more mundane.

Who am I?

A child. A parent. A spouse. A caregiver. A teacher. A friend. A sister. An aunt. A middle child. A Pisces. An ISTP or ISFP or INTP or INFP – S-N and T-F could go either way depending on the day.

Lots of possible labels. In reality a spiritual being learning many lessons as I live a human existence.

Currently retired from the Library of Congress, I live with my husband of over fifty years in South Carolina, USA. He has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease – hence the label of caregiver added to spouse. We have two sons both living with their fiancées, one in Murrells Inlet, SC, and one in New Orleans, LA.

Core belief

One of my core beliefs is that everyone has the right to accurate information in a form they can work with. This could be print, braille, or audio. And they shouldn’t have to fight in order to get it.

My professional life began as a communications instructor for newly blind adults.

I have been a braille teacher and rehabilitation teacher in different settings. A blind rehabilitation specialist and education therapist with the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Head of the Braille Development Section (department) of the National Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, The Library of Congress – say that three times quickly. I am a parliamentarian (expert in Robert’s Rules of Order), a Distinguished Toastmaster, and active in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

I have been involved in the writing process for over thirty years – writing reports and articles, contributing to books, co-editing an updated instruction manual. I have edited and proofread both non-fiction and fiction books and articles.

These days I let the faerie come out of hiding as I use my gifts as a Book Enchantress to help new authors share their message with the world.
