How to be Creative – by Sheri Sennhauser

I would like to introduce you to my latest dining room table centerpiece.. I tend to change them seasonally but this not always a rule, it’s more of a guideline (lol)  depends on my mood!  I chose Aphrodite very carefully.  We are in Spring and the earth is renewing, the birds are singing, people are out enjoying the weather. It’s time for love and all things new.  She makes me smile every time I walk into the room.

When creating this bowl with Aphrodite, the shells and the crystals I simply allowed my intuition to take over and put in the bowl whatever my heart told me too.  There are various shells, rose quartz, clear crystal quartz, pink agate, selenite and variscite.  To name a few.

Being creative can be so many different things: cooking, painting, clay, knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, jewelry and a whole host of other activities that I could spend all night listing.  You get the idea. Being creative is simply taking an idea, molding it to your purpose then utilizing it.

A great example of creativity on the fly is my new tank top!  I freaking love this thing. I came up with the quote, contacted my friend Brigitte and purchased it through her.

Here it is:

I am so totally going to own these words!  This is me and I like me. I get frustrated sometimes with me but that’s all part of the human experience.  I do not dwell in dark places, just visit from time to time. (giggles softly)

Before I go any further I have to admit that I do not consider myself an artist.  I am a dabbler!  A little of this, a little of that.  I get bored easily and it’s not uncommon to find 5-7 projects on the go!  I am definitely a Jack of all Trades, and Master of None.  Again I am okay with this, it’s just who I am and how my mind works.  I love knowledge for the sake of it and the more I am learning the happier I am.  That’s not to say I haven’t accidentally stumbled into some creative projects I did not ever think I would try because I have.  It also doesn’t mean that I won’t go back and paint 10 pictures then make 20 journals.  I let my intuition guide me and it’s never let me down!

Finding creative ideas is easy!  Pinterest and You Tube are my two favourite places to go.  Simply search and BOOM! 101 ideas for anything.  The hard part is convincing yourself to try it.  You see it, you want it but fear takes over.  Fear of it not being good enough, fear of not “getting” it, fear of what others will say etc. Let me tell you, those are the worst reasons not to.

When you find yourself wanting to try something, be still for a moment, close your eyes and ask yourself “why”?  If the answers come to you as fears and doubts that’s the old ego getting in the way again.  The ego can come up with a bazillion reasons why not and there are also lower energies that may be there too.  Just waiting to let you be catatonic.  Never fully owning your creativity or giving you permission to try.

If that happens and it will.. simply tell the fears/anxieties to SOCK OFF!  Yell it!  Rock those words like a boss!  Then laugh cause you were just yelling at yourself!  I do it ALL the time.  It’s fun, it’s freeing and you learn it’s okay to NOT be perfect.  Then (big drum roll) move on.

Try this, close your eyes, take 3 really deep breaths and allow your body to completely relax.  Start at your toes and work up to your head.  Breathing gently and steadily.  Give yourself a lot of time for this part; relaxing and breathing and keep going.  Once you feel you are ready in your mind ask your higher self/God/Goddess self/Spirit guides/Angels whomever you feel most comfortable talking too to help show you colours, textures, patterns, projects, then listen with your heart and let the images come to you.  If the ego interjects with negatives ask your higher power to help quiet the noise so you can listen better.  Look for symbols and images.  This may take some practice depending on your level of meditation practice but it is well worth the work.  When you feel you are done, thank your guides (Gratitude!) and take your time coming back to your body and full awareness.

Fear keeps us from doing so many things and when we lift the veil, we will see clearly.  So many people think they have no creative skills at all.  They don’t realize the untapped genius waiting to jump out and say “howdy”.  You do not have to be Leonardo di Vinci to paint or Edgar Allen Poe to write.  You practice creativity everyday and probably don’t name it.  Every time you prepare a meal, go for a walk, solve a problem at work, care for your children, we don’t always see that in our mundane lives we come up with some pretty creative ideas/ways of getting things done.

I understand when we “make” something and put it out there for the world to see,it’s scary.  You don’t know what the reaction will be.  You are exposing yourself to both criticism and praise.  And you’re right some people will love what you do and encourage you. Others will not.  You need to focus on your journey and how the “piece” you made makes you feel.  When you create something it’s not for the rest of the world, it’s for you.  No matter what the medium is you are creating from your heart.  If it’s honest, then it’s beautiful.

Here are some of my paintings.  I follow a You Tube channel called Painting with Jane.  I just love her!  She breaks it down, makes it simple to follow.  I bought all of my supplies from the dollar store when you are dabbling go cheap at first.  If the project really gets your passions going then start collecting the tools you’ll need.

When I look at these I don’t see the fine honed skills of a great artist.  I like the shapes, the colours and the way they make me feel.  I didn’t make them for anyone in particular although the crow picture went to a friend for Christmas.  The other is in my craft room.  She reminds to chill and not judge.  After trying a few more of these I tried Intuitive Painting.  No paint brushes! Fingers, hands, crystals, shells and anything else I could get my hands on.  I didn’t think.  I just felt.  I let my heart do the work and this is what happened.

I love doing these.  I see a big picture but then I look more closely and I see other images.  Again I did these for me.  It doesn’t matter if I don’t get 100 likes when I share them on my Facebook page.  All that matters is they speak to me.

Let’s go back to my new tank top.  It says “Perfectly Imperfect” because it’s what we are.  The only perfection is in acceptance of being imperfect.  Do not let fear hold you back from creating anything you want to try.  You are more than you believe.  You can strive to try new things.  You are being creative right now.  Own your power and find what speaks to you.  Then Do It.

As always, get messy, get goopy and lose yourself in the process, NOT the outcome.
