How to Manage Worry: From One Loop to Another – by Kat McCarthy

Do you know those annoying songs that get trapped in your head? The ones you can’t stop listening to because they play unbidden, over and over again in your mind? I am pretty sure that the mechanism that allows that to happen is the same mechanism that allows us to maintain our worry loops. You know the ones? Things that you worry about over and over and plays unbidden in your mind that you can’t stop listening too? Little loops of thought or music that replay for no other reason but that they can. We don’t usually agree to listen to worry loops or song loops – it’s not a volenteer thing.

But maybe we should… the song loops at any rate.

Most of us know that we get what we think about the most so having worry loops running can be a worrisome thing. Song loops may actually be preferable. Music is even more potent then worry as an attractor because is causes an emotional response directly. So if it is choosen wisely and deliberately, a song loop can be a powerful ally.

I have been deliberately running a song loop in my head the past 3 weeks while Peter and I moved from one house to another. The results have been unexpected and also amazing. I had more stamina, more enduance, more tolerance and the whole move happened with as much ease and happiness as I’ve ever experienced.

Would it surprise you to find out that the song I have been using is ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams?

Because I’m happy!

Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.

Because I’m happy!

Clap along if you believe happiness is the truth.

Because I’m happy!

Clap along if you know what happiness is to you.

Because I’m happy!

Clap along if you feel like that’s what you want to do.

Really now, how can I go wrong with those lyrics running through my head?

So the question remains, how to do you deliberately create a song loop in your mind?

Simple; find a song that is catchy, simple, makes you feel good and that you really like. Begin by playing the song over and over again. While you are playing it over and over, make a point of memorizing the lyrics to the chorus. You will know when you have heard the song enough because when you go make some tea or whatever, you will still hear it playing in your head.

Now, every time you notice a worry loop playing out in your mind or begin to feel like you are struggling, begin to think of the lyrics to the chorus of the song you have implanted in your mind.

You may need to imprint the song into your mind again in two or three weeks but this is really a very low maintenance way of losing your worries.

Happy singing along!
