National Mutt Day – by Annette Rochelle Aben

“In every heart, there is a hole. In every shelter, there is love in which to fill it.” This famous quote is from Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, who created National Mutt Day, in 2005. Ms. Paige’s efforts, raise awareness of the need of mixed breed, shelter dogs to find loving homes.

80% of the dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. While not as trendy as the fancy pure breeds, the mixed breed dogs are generally heartier and happier. Families may find that a mixed breed dog fits their lifestyles better because these dogs just want to be included and loved.

On July 31st each year (and on December 2nd) Make a trip to a local shelter and you could be taking home a new friend. If you cannot adopt a mutt, then consider making a $5 donation to the shelter. The shelter will greatly appreciate your money. You could also spend time with the dogs, who would love the attention. Take a dog out for a walk, bring toys or donations of food. If you can take home a new addition to the family, you’ll have a whole new reason to celebrate each year. After all, even the humble mutt, deserves to feel the top dog!
