Rebirth is the Reason for the Season by Annette

Annette Rochelle Aben

Rebirth is the reason for the season. I have found that the more I pay attention to the sights and sounds of the world around me, the more astounded I am at the beauty and magic that exists.     In the great State of Michigan, where I reside, we are shaking off the snowiest, coldest winter in our history. There were days when I would gaze longingly out of the back window of my office only to wonder where the snow ended and the yard began.  This not being a ‘normal winter’ for me I soon shifted my thoughts and musings to what must be going on underneath it all.  If watching the snow lay about wasn’t doing anything special for me perhaps imagining what all that melting snow was doing for the ground beneath it was more intriguing and indeed it was!

I began to imagine that the snow was like this massive Brita pitcher, a holding tank of fluid that as the ground found itself requiring liquid to feed root systems it could have a drink.  Then I allowed myself to picture thirsty seeds absorbing all that they needed from the melting white stuff and gaining strength and energy from the libations.  Of course realizing there was this active, thriving community underneath it all while all I ‘saw’ was an endless blanket of white about as deep as a the legs of our glider in the corner (pretty deep my friends, pretty deep) I found a reason to cheer the snow, celebrate its existence for I felt the gratitude of the underground community and looked forward to it showing its appreciation in full bloom.

Yes it has been a l-o-n-g hard winter here in Wayne County, Michigan and while there are still pot holes to dodge, and icy patches in the ground here and there I have blessed it all and been blessed by it all for hidden under a blanket of white, the new season is preparing busily for its debut, a coming out party if you will and shall spring into action as soon as it is ready!  Gestation takes a bit of time, lots of nourishment and proves itself well worth the anticipation and curiosity.  We can wish it would happen sooner, be anxious for what we easily tire of to be on its merry way but there truly IS a time to every purpose!  All hail the rebirth of the earth as we welcome a healthy Spring thanks in large part to the generous bounty of winter’s blessings!

You have me all excited and ready for picnics of PB&J sandwiches and fresh strawberries like in the days of my youth when I jumped on spring the minute it arrived… These days, it seems as though I need schedule a day to celebrate it’s arrival and hope that spring agrees to the appointed meeting place and time. 🙂 Thank you for the reminder of patience Annette. Brilliant!
