Two Daily Practices for a More Mindful, Loving New Year – by Shuddhaanandaa Brahmachari

The only gift we have is our day-to-day existence, we live one day at a time, this daily 24×7, it is our Life! Let us live each day well without any regrets.

A daily practice of sitting quietly with our own self, without any expectations, not even focusing or concentrating, but only feeling our presence, can give us the biggest gift of our authentic self. After all, what is the use of living someone else’s dreams when we have come here to find our true self, our unique presence! The following two practices should be done daily; it is special time that we spend with our self-within that cannot be compromised.

Only the daily practice of self-study can create vigilant guards at the doors of all our senses. Yes, we are ingesting “food” for thought or feeling through all our five senses, all the time. It is important to carefully choose what we are letting in, what we are chewing, for that creates our mood and our attitude, happy or otherwise. As all the doors of our sense receptors are opened, we are naturally drawn outside! So much of our life energy is spent fixing the external things of life. Blessed are they who seek the master key inside through the daily practice of self-study and introspection.

We need to slow down, and dive within to be in touch with our inner core where lies the mine of happiness and peace. We need to give our body the food that will create good health at ALL levels — physical, mental and emotional. Remember, the gross part of the food creates the gross body. The subtle part of the food creates the mind and intelligence.  Self-awareness lets us choose consciously what we ingest, with love.

It is difficult to make meditation a daily priority. There are always many more things to do, but most of us forget that handling our daily business of life at home and at work demands a mind that is mindful of its instinctive reactivity and stress. Meditation gives us the insight to be proactive and not reactive, responsive and not aggressive. Thus we move through life with better vision and values to make us happy and contented.

Daily meditation will transform the unconscious instincts of fear, hate, and jealousy into the conscious realization of the oneness of all existence. Daily meditation not only neutralizes the negative impact of suppressed anger and frustration, but it also builds the muscle of our mind to have more immunity to stand the challenges of a negative environment.

If we can’t find time in our busy lives to meditate for long periods of time, we can practice catnap meditations at home or work. Throughout the day and night we can take short breaks for a few minutes to pause and dwell in the silent recess of our heart by withdrawing from the external world and its bustles to feel our eternal connection to the Divine within. These short breaks will slow us down to realize the deeper purpose of our soul life. These are our mindful moments. We stop, unplug, and breathe deep, long mindful breaths, emptying our mind to be filled by Universal Grace. These daily moments of mindfulness light up our path of life with spiritual enlightenment, for all we are seeking is right Now and Here, nowhere else!!
